Tips for dealing with false workplace accusations

Has an employee made false accusations at your company? Maybe they claimed that it was a toxic workplace. Maybe they said that you discriminated against them. Maybe they claimed that the workplace was unsafe, they made a report and you retaliated against them.

No matter what, that’s definitely not what happened. You feel like they’re just attacking the company and/or you personally, and they’re using these false accusations to do it. Now what?

This is a tricky situation. You do not want to do or say anything that you are going to regret. As such, here are a few key tips that can help:

  • Focus on the facts. If the facts of the case are in your favor, find out how to present them clearly and accurately.
  • Stay calm and do not let your emotions get the best of you. You may feel angry and sad about what’s happening, but you have to make rational decisions and, again, focus on facts instead of emotions.
  • Figure out what they want to accomplish. Try to understand their point of view. Knowing why this is happening can help you work to defend yourself.
  • Cooperate with any investigations and legal procedures. It may feel very unfair to you that you have to go through this, but remember that cooperation is the fastest and easiest way to get to the other side.

As you do all of this, make sure that you also understand your legal rights and all of the options that you have. Try to stay dialed in on working through the process and protecting yourself and your company in the face of unjust accusations.
